To begin with, what sort of board is preferred? The "default" board is 1/2" signmaker's plywood, which is relatively lightweight and resistant to warping. But for a bit more, there is also the option to use a 1" thick solid wood panel with slats in the back, with or without a recessed center ("kovcheg"). The panels I use are crafted by St. John's Workshop, of Blue River, WI.

Halos are typically gilded with 22k gold leaf, as are the backgrounds, but painted colors are another option: light ochre, pale blue, pale green (paired with dark green borders), and even red. The borders by default are dark ochre/light brown, but could instead be gilded, painted dark green (paired with a pale green background), or brick red. Sometimes the garments of the Saint can be determined as desired, but usually, specific colors are prescribed.
Inscriptions can be written in any language, and even multiple languages can be accommodated. Sometimes, a text may need to be supplied. |
Finally, how exactly is the preference for the depiction of the Saint- half length or full length? Is it meant to be an exact copy of another icon? Are there any other specific details desired- buildings (such as churches) in the background, smaller saints in the borders, Christ or the Theotokos at the top, ornamentation in the borders, scrolls with inscriptions, fancy brocade vestments? These are all extra costs. Clear communication is vital in the early stages for such preferences. Working together with the iconographer, it is possible to create a totally unique icon. Frescos are executed in acrylics on prepared canvas, and are pasted on the walls of the church. It's necessary for the iconographer to visit the church at least once before work begins, in order to understand the architectural space. |
